Roberto Durán

Roberto Durán: A boxing legend in Miami Beach

Boxing is a sport that has produced many legends, but Roberto Durán stands out among them all. A fierce, relentless fighter who dominated the ring throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he became one of the greatest boxers of all time. Born in Panama in 1951, Durán began boxing at age 16. He quickly earned a reputation as a powerful, skilled tactician and soon captured the world lightweight championship.

Durán faced many formidable opponents over his career, including Sugar Ray Leonard, in some of the most dramatic battles in boxing history. Throughout those bouts, he consistently demonstrated his durability, power, and resolve.

One of the defining moments of Durán’s career came in 1980 when he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard by unanimous decision at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium to capture the WBC welterweight title. Leonard won their rematch later that year in New Orleans in the famous ‘No Más’ fight. Durán also developed strong ties to Miami Beach and later trained at South Beach Boxing during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Durán’s professional career ended in 2002 following injuries from a 2001 car accident. South Beach Boxing remembers Durán as an important part of the gym’s history, where he trained during his later years and where his daughter also spent time training.

Roberto Durán remains an inspiration to fighters worldwide, with a career that helped define Miami Beach boxing history.
